A Message from Cara
Hello fabulous colleagues,
I'm writing this e-mail to stimulate some discussion among students regarding the expenses of internship. As we all know, changes that occur for students are initiated by students, that's why we have a union. So, even if internship is years away, it could benefit you to put the change in motion right now. Being in the middle of my internship year and anxious about making ends meet, it is my hope that something can change to waive registration/tuition fees. Some of my intern cohort members do not pay for tuition during internship, so clearly, other programs/graduate schools have a different system.
What is the cost of tuition? Well, if you take the 3 credits required by our program, the yearly cost (based on this year's tuition/fees) is $8,676. Does your internship stipend cover these costs? Maybe. It depends on your stipend and the cost of living in the area. For me, my stipend is one of the highest of the university counseling center internship sites at $27,300. Yes, that sounds like a lot considering what you make in your GTF, however I take home about $18,000 of that and if I pay $8,676 for the year, that leaves me with $9,324 for the 12 months to pay for living expenses (about $777/mo.). So, this could be a livable amount for a lot of single students who can have roommates, however not so much for the parents in our program or for those who are helping to support other family members (and having family members on benefits). There is an option to take loans during internship, however you have to register for at least 5 credits ($13,620). The loan maximum is about $!
20,500, so you'd keep your take home pay and be refunded about $6880 for the year, and since that doesn't include summer tuition (you have to be enrolled during the term you graduate, which is summer), take another $2,169 out for summer tuition and you'd have about $1169 to live on each month. That's less than my GTF level III income for the past 3 years. Also, there's the interest on $20,500 of loans, which I won't calculate, because I frankly don't want to think about that just yet. Disclaimer: these are estimates based on lesser used math skills.
There are some other costs that add up during the year, such as dissertation copying, binding and copyright fees; travel for dissertation defense; rent/deposit [for example, in CA you can be charged up to twice the amount of rent for a deposit--we put out $2100 just to move in]; moving costs; car registration; license fees; auto insurance (which doubled in CA); any new activation fees (e.g., internet); and I think I could go on and on. Additionally, the economy is tough and all my intern cohort members who have partners here have had difficulty finding jobs.
Take home message: You can advocate for a change in the system, perhaps working with the GTFF. In the meantime, save at least $5,000 to transition into internship if you're moving away from Oregon and plan for the year financially. Internship is time and energy intensive (even though it's fantastically rewarding) and if you're working on your dissertation, financial worries are only energy sappers. I am doing fine here, however it's not easy for me and even more difficult for most people I've talked to who are on internship.
For financial and other tips about surviving internship, please feel free to contact me! I'll be here either working or disscrastinating (procrastinating on my dissertation), like I am right now. :)

Social Justice Committee Update
Thank you for participating in today's food drive for Food for Lane County! Today, we collected $106 dollars and 12 cans of food for donation! Because they can turn every dollar donated into 6 pounds of food for distribution, that means we have contributed over 600 pounds of food today for our community. Not bad for a bunch of busy, financially challenged graduate students!!
On behalf of the SALA social justice committee, and particularly Paula (thanks for organizing this, Paula), congratulations and thanks again to everyone!
